South Western Railway Delay Repay: claim for 15+ minute delays

South Western Railway (SWR) is one of the busiest operators on the national network and runs a Delay Repay 15 scheme. If your SWR train is delayed by 15 minutes or more, you are entitled to compensation — including pro-rata refunds for season ticket holders. This guide explains the thresholds, the 28-day deadline, and how to submit a claim.

SWR Delay Repay thresholds

DelayCompensationExample
15–29 minutes25% of single fare£10 ticket → £2.50 refund
30–59 minutes50% of single fare£10 ticket → £5.00 refund
60–119 minutes100% of single fare£10 ticket → £10.00 refund
120+ minutes100% of return fare£20 return → £20.00 refund

These percentages apply to single and return tickets. Season tickets, including weekly, monthly and annual passes, are refunded on a pro-rata basis.

Season ticket pro-rata payments

One of the most common questions from SWR commuters is how season ticket holders are paid. South Western Railway calculates the daily value of your season ticket and uses that as the basis for the Delay Repay percentage. For example, a £1,000 annual season ticket has a daily value of roughly £2.74, so a 15–29 minute delay would pay around 69p and a 30–59 minute delay around £1.37.

The pro-rata calculation is applied automatically when you submit the season ticket details in the SWR Delay Repay form. You do not need to work out the amount yourself.

Step-by-step: claim SWR Delay Repay

  1. Check your delay was 15 minutes or more on a South Western Railway service.
  2. Open the official portal: southwesternrailway.com/contact-and-help/delay-repay.
  3. Sign in with an SWR account, or continue as a guest. You will need your journey details.
  4. Enter the affected date, scheduled departure, actual arrival, origin and destination stations.
  5. Upload proof of travel if requested — a photo of your paper ticket, smart ticket receipt, or booking confirmation.
  6. Choose your refund method: bank transfer, PayPal, or rail vouchers.
  7. Submit within 28 days. SWR typically processes claims within 14 working days.

What counts as an SWR delay?

SWR operates Delay Repay regardless of the cause of the delay. This means you can claim for delays caused by track faults, signalling failures, train faults, severe weather, staff shortages, and other operational problems. The key requirement is that the service arrived 15 minutes or more after its scheduled time.

If your booked train is cancelled and you take a later SWR or other accepted replacement service, the delay is measured against the arrival time of your original booked service. Keep your original ticket and any alternative booking references.

Let Transport for Claims track your SWR delays

Transport for Claims monitors live service data across the South Western Railway network and can flag delays that match your route history. When a delay hits the 15-minute threshold, you get a reminder to claim before the 28-day window closes — so no refund is missed.
